To insure proper handling of fresh muscle specimens, the Muscle Path Lab (MPL) should be contacted prior to procurement of the specimen, preferably one day in advance, by either phone (966-9404) or pager (123-5525). If there is no response at either of these numbers, please call Surgical Pathology at 843-1476.                                                                                         

Specimen requirements:

Approximately 100 mg (~ 1.0 x 0.5 x 0.5cm) of fresh tissue is recommended, however, it varies depending on the age of the patient & differential diagnosis.

Collect sample with scalpel, no cautery please.

Place the muscle on a piece of sponge or gauze slightly moistened (or damp) with saline. Place in a sterile container labeled with the Patient's first & last name, medical record number including check digit, DOB, date/ time of collection.  The specimen must be accompanied with a completed Surgical Pathology request form.
