Specimen collection instructions for MRSA PCR Test (MRSAR)

Note: This assay is approved for specimens collected from the nares. Other specimen types will not be accepted for PCR. MRSA detection from sites other than nares should be performed by culture (See MRSAS).

Note: Specimens must be collected using the Double swab, RED CAP swabs (Healthlink LQ Stuart TransPorter Swabs, Lawson #050439). For pediatric patients, TWO mini-tip wire swabs (ORANGE CAP, Lawson #050440) may be used in the same way. Other swab types will NOT be accepted and recollection will be necessary.

Note: Patient should not use nasal sprays/ointments prior to collection.

1.         Ask the patient to tilt his/her head back. Insert dry swabs approximately 1-2 cm into each nostril (adults – less     for  children). Use only the approved swab collection device. It is important that both swabs be used to collect the specimen.
2.                 Rotate the swabs against the inside of the nostril for 3 seconds. Apply slight pressure with a finger on the outside of the nose to help assure good contact between the swab and inside of the nose.
3.                  Using the same swabs, repeat for the second nostril, trying not to touch anything but the inside of the nose.
4.              Remove the plastic transport tube from swab packaging. Twist off the tube cap and discard it. Place the swabs into the plastic transport tube. The tubes should go all the way into the tube until they rest on top of the sponge at the bottom of the tube. Make sure the cap is on tightly. The swabs should be attached to the cap at all times.
5.                Label the plastic transport tube with the proper patient label. Tube the requisition and swabs to tube station #82, Microbiology.
