Comments

Lesions should be collected by unroofing a fresh lesion and swabbing the base of the lesion.  A white capped swab should be used and transported to the laboratory in the swab transport tube.  Do not use the swab/UTM system intended for respiratory viral collection as this may result in false negative results.

With the exception of neonates, blood is not an appropriate specimen for diagnosis of HSV 1/2 infection. For additional information refer to Numbered Memo #108.
