SpecimenRoutine:Fresh Stool (<2 hrs old);  At least 50 gm if solid, 20 mL if liquid.
 If transport will be delayed, obtain PARA-PAK preservative and/or mailing container from the lab.

CommentsThis test should be used only for patients who are compromised hosts, or who have a history of foreign travel.  For other patients, see Parasite Screen. Test not recommended after >4 days hospitalization.  One Specimen is usually adequate in most cases:  up to 3 specimens, 24 hours apart accepted.  Only one stool will be accepted for each patient per day.  NO SWABS accepted.  Stool specimens should not be collected after the administration of barium, bismuth or oil.  Mailing Containers available from Lab (6-4059)
