Specimens submitted for detection of IgM antibodies to Hepatitis A Virus (anti-HAV IgM) are tested using a chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA).  The CMIA provides qualitative detection of HAV specific IgM antibodies on the Abbott Architect instrument.  It is intended for the determination of immune status to HAV infection.  Results are reported as nonreactive, reactive or grayzone.  It is recommended to retest patients that have grayzone results at weekly intervals to differentiate early acute infection associated with rapidly rising IgM from late acute infection associated with declining or unchanging IgM levels.
